I have had the downloaded version for a couple of years. This is an invaluable book for anyone trying to understand systems. One is always asking, "How big". For example when working in the intersection of the nano technology world and the bio world size matters. How big is a bacterium, a protein, a nano particle and they why do they do what they do. Not only does this book have many significant numbers, but they present in a brilliant manner how they got there as well as the implications.Size, quantity, parameters such as diffusion constants, all have critical part to play in developing new understanding. One can go through the massive texts on cell biology or genetics and never have a feeling for how big something is, how frequently cells divide, or more critically how to get or reasonably infer the answer. This book is that essential bridge. It is not a handbook, it is a guide to understanding.Of all books, I have kept this next to my desk and have referred to it constantly. I would suggest that anyone who wants to truly understand nature obtain this book for the daily use! Great job!
This book is fundamental to understand biological processes in their true nature. At the nanoscale of biology, distances, time, concentrations and relative numbers, speed, diffusion, and all properties of matter, have a different meaning than at the scale of our own bodies. A must read.

Some things happen incredibly fast, others are surprisingly slow. And even after you come to know the names and functions of many of the molecular species found inside cells, there are lots of questions about numbers that suggest themselves. Just how many ribosomes are there in a typical cell? How long does it take to transcribe DNA to RNA and then translate it into protein? How many photons does it take to make a cyanobacterium? etc. Along the way we learn other interesting facts such as that there are estimated to be 100,000,000 times as many virus particles as there are human cells in the world.The authors have been compiling interesting numbers about biology at their web site www.bionumbers.org for several years. Now they've produced this book which explores many numerical properties of cells. How many, how fast, how much energy, how big, etc. They perform back-of-the-envelope calculations and walk you through coming up with answers to many fascinating questions.This book would also serve as a good, if somewhat less formal, introduction to the field of physical biology.In any case, it's a fun and enlightening read that will have you thinking about cells in new ways as you begin to attach some concrete numbers to the conceptual ideas of traditional molecular biology. I very highly recommend this book to anyone learning, or simply interested in, the workings of the cell.G.
This is a delightful book that covers the field of molecular and cell biology from a completely different and unusual perspective. Its not just that knowing the numbers is interesting, it causes the reader to re-think much of what we normally assume about how cells work. The book is a treasure trove of interesting information.
