About the Author

Thomas Norman DeWolf serves as Executive Director for Coming to the Table and is the author of Inheriting the Trade: A Northern Family Confronts Its Legacy as the Largest Slave-Trading Dynasty in U.S. History, the story of his experiences participating in the making of the Emmy-nominated documentary Traces of the Trade, in which he is featured. Tom is co-author of Gather at the Table, winner of the Phillis Wheatley Award for Best Nonfiction. The African American Jazz Caucus awarded him the 2012 Spirit of Freedom Award for Social Justice. Tom is a certified STAR Practitioner (Strategies for Trauma Awareness & Resilience). He lives in Bend, Oregon. Jodie Geddes is the Community Organizing Coordinator at Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY). Jodie serves as Vice President of the Board of Managers of Coming to the Table. She received her M.A in Conflict Transformation from the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, where she recently co-taught “Restorative Justice Organizing for Communities” at the Summer Peacebuilding Institute. This weighty record showing 30 years of beaver watching is definitely worth the wait.Everything about this book is impressive: its stunning photographs, gripping account of little known beaver details, and its truly classy lay out, right down to the beaver silhouetted page number in the corner. I had prepared myself to be impressed, and was not disappointed.Michael Runtz's book was still filled with gloriously unexpected treasures. From the amazing photograph of a beaver floating on its back (yes you read that right, not a sea otter, I swear, he speculates he might be picking a splinter from its teeth with its rear toe) to the exciting collection of facts about their lives, (did you know that when beavers breathe they replaces a whopping 75% of the oxygen in their lungs? Compared to the paltry human rate of 15%!) or that beaver tails in colder climates actually look different in the fall than the spring, depending on how much fat content they’ve lost from it over the winter?If some of the photos seem vaguely familiar they should, Runtz supplied his stills to Jari Osborne’s Beaver Documentary (Beaver Whisperer in Canada, and Nature’s “Leave it to Beaver” in America). My favorite chapters were those documenting beaver effects. First a lovely one showing the biodiversity that blooms in beaver ponds, with beautiful macro photography of gnats, insects, dragonflies, to featherlight photos of birds and water fowl, to richly-textured images of otter and moose you can practically feel. Then a beautifully solemn one about what happens to the trees beavers kill by flooding. (Showing excellent homes for a variety of woodpeckers, wood duck and blue heron). And finally a chapter on the pond’s “afterlife”, what happens when the pond silts up and beavers move on, as the flora take over and the fauna shift accordingly with the flourishing nutrient exchange.With over 200 pages containing stunning photos from one end to the other, this is a book you will look at again and again. I anticipated and missed a forward from some smart researcher like Glynnis Hood or Dietland Muller-Swarze, talking about why his photos are invaluable, but maybe this book isn’t trying to prove that beavers have value. As a professional wildlife biologist/researcher and park naturalist, I found Dam Builders to be the most amazingly photographed life history of the American Beaver ever written. The author, himself a naturalist and wildlife photographer, has followed this amazing creature for more than 30 years in Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park to produce this stunningly illustrated natural history of the "mammal that built a continent". Gently written yet entirely factual, the book is an easy read if one can look away from the stunning photography long enough to do so. It holds a "top shelf" location in my own extensive natural history library. Highly recommended.

I'm a big fan of Riordan's Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series, and this was a funny and entertaining complement to the series.

I love the books Rick Riordan writes. You learn so much, but it is not boring at all. I like the way he makes his characters. They are not all the same. Consider the fact that this book is not for little children. I gave this book a rating of five stars because l the way he makes learning and action go hand in hand. I like the way he understands dyslexia and ADHD. It has helped me to understand my dyslexia and ADHD. There is nothing to dislike. I recommend this book to people who are in love with action or to people who like Greek mythology.

Riordan gives fans of his Greek and Roman series some great new material in the four stories presented here.In the first, Luke and Thalia must find a way to escape from a trap set for demigods. Or else they will be dinner. And how did they get into this trap? Lured by a goat. A goat who can dispense ice and Pepsi products! Hilarious!Percy just wants to spend time with his girlfriend Annabeth. But he is coopted into finding Hermes' lost staff. Stolen by a monster of course. A monster who is intent on making profits off of knock-offs rather than stealing originals. Hilarity ensues.At the center of the third tale is a table who ran away because he was polished with Windex rather than Lemon Pledge. And now maybe the entire laboratory will explode because the Argo II needs its syncopator. Unless Jason and Piper can help Leo find Buford, the run-away table - who happens to have the syncopator in one of its drawers. Along the way they encounter drunk underage maenads intent on finding Lord Dionysus. More hilarity ensues.The final tale asks the question, what happened to the demigods who fought on the side of Kronos after the events of The Last Olympian? The story gives good answers about Mist and why monsters can smell heroes. Written by Riordan's son 16yo son, it doesn't contain the same sense of humor or whimsy as the other stories. And while it's not a bad story, it doesn't make one smile like the other stories do. The tale is about an internecine battle between two children of Hecate. Still, it does not draw away from the awesomeness of the other three stories.

The demigods are as diverse as us mere mortals, and so are their adventures. In this companion to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus series' Riordan Riordan gives us a few sneak peaks back in time to fill in gaps around the other stories, and his son, Haley Riordan, takes the groundbreaking series his father started as his own bedtime stories and gives us his first story set in the world of demigods."The Diary of Luke Castellan"Luke is a character we see as a bad seed, but there has to be more to him. In this diary excerpt, we see Luke and Thalia fighting for their lives out in the world against the monsters who hunt them. What they don't expect is to find another kind of demigod who could be their very undoing."Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes"The gods can be many thing, but one thing they can be counted on for is to need the demigods to do their dirty work. All Percy wants to do is spend time with Annabeth, his newly anointed girlfriend, but Hermes has another plan for their time, and of course, it involves one bizarre and cantankerous monster!"Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford"As a son of Hephaestus, Leo is an amazing tinkerer. Unfortunately, by failing to properly care for a magical end table, he may have lost the key to stopping certain disaster (Windex is NOT the same as Lemon Pledge!). Luckily, his friend would never let him fail."Son of Magic"Claymore doesn't have time for questions, and certainly not questions that will cause him as much trouble as Alabaster's question. As the leading expert on death, Alabaster hopes Claymore can help him stop the evil woman who is coming after them, but he has no idea how dangerous it is to even know Alabaster.This was a cute selection of short stories separated by word jumbles and quizzes to test your knowledge of the Greek vs. Roman gods. The short stories were not necessary for understanding the rest of the series', but they are certainly fun for the Olympus buff. The final story, "Son of Magic," is interestingly written by Riordan's son, Haley Riordan. Before the story, in a short note, he explains the Percy Jackson sagas began as bedtime stories to his son, and Haley was given the opportunity to write a story for this book. To be honest, that story has a very different tone from Rick's stories, which you have to be prepared for (it is very dark!), but I was quite impressed. It is a different kind of story, but the idea that the original audience for these stories delivered this contribution at the age of 16 is pretty impressive! Of course, he doesn't have the same abilities of his father, but if he keeps writing like this, he will get there some day!

I enjoyed this second collection of short story in demigod diaries.You get some back story for Luke Castellan.And some of these story are reference in Hero's of Olympus.I really liked Haley's Riordan short story Son of Magic.And full color illustration of some of the Hero's of Olympus.Note:( The interview with Hermes staff is in Demigod Diaries and not in Demigod files.Sorry)

So, this was a great book. The quest for Buford wasn't very action packed, just kinda meh. The first one, Luke's diary, I loved because we see Annabeth as a small and very cute little girl. The second one I adored, although Annabeth to me never seemed like the kind of person to plan anniversaries for every month of dating. The last one, son of magic, yes, was well written for a 16 year old. It was, however, very dark and violent to be featured in this book, which is why it only has four stars. I love Hayley and his writing style, but I don't think that it belongs in a book like this. Perhaps it would be better for him to have kept working on it and published an entire book of his own instead of putting it in here. Then the book could be more appropriate for the age that the first three stories were geared for. I don't think that an eight and nine year old would need to read about jaws getting kicked off, or children murdered, or gunshots to the head. Just some thoughts, in case Haley is like me and would totally check this page once or twice a day to see what people said, Hayley, take your bit, make it longer, and tell your dad to sell it to the older age range. I do, however, love your writing style. It's faced paced and drew you in very quickly and was very deep and involved for such a short piece. Imagine what you could do with unlimited page count?
