#39,663 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
I bought this Bible because I wanted to add the NRSV translation in a Catholic edition to my Kindle Bible collection. It is an ecumenical translation produced by Roman Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Jewish scholars, and it has been adopted by many denominations, though not approved for use in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. This review is based on my impressions using this edition on my Kindle Keyboard. The active Table of Contents has links to every book and chapter, though you cannot jump to a specific verse. I have three "direct-verse-jump" Kindle Bibles for situations when I especially want that feature, for example in a Bible study group where people are discussing and quickly moving from one section to another. However, for personal use, when I am not pressed for time and tend to focus on one book or chapter, I have found that the links here meet my needs. After the Cover and Title Page, you see "Frontmatter," a section which includes Abbreviations for the books in the Old and New Testaments with links to each book, a Preface to the NRSV Catholic Edition, and an article called "To the Reader." The Preface, written in 1992 by Alexander A. Di Lella, O.F.M., a member and past president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, gives background about the Roman Catholic Canon and arrangement of the books according to the Vulgate. He indicates that the NRSV Bible, first published in 1990, was authorized in this Catholic edition by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in the USA and received the ecclesiastical approval of the Catholic Bishops of both the United States and Canada. The article which follows, called "To the Reader," written by Bruce M. Metzger for the committee of translators, gives historical background about the development of the NRSV following the discovery of such new manuscripts as the Dead Sea Scrolls. It also discusses the translators' decision to use inclusive language for human beings."Frontmatter" is followed by the Old and New Testaments. Harper's description of this Bible on the Amazon page says that each book is introduced with an original woodcut, but no woodcuts appear on my Kindle! On the other hand, the font used throughout is clear and attractive, and you can see both the location and page (and can search for either). Additionally, the text contains numbers which serve as links to footnotes showing alternate translations and readings based on ancient texts, and these links work well. For example, Isaiah 7.14 reads, "Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel." A footnote after "young woman" indicates, "Gk the virgin," and a footnote after "Immanuel" notes, "That is 'God is with us.'" Luke 1.28, referring to the angel Gabriel's visit to the Virgin Mary, reads, "And he came to her and said, 'Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you,'" followed by a footnote indicating, "Other ancient authorities add 'Blessed are you among women.'" I like having this access to links placed within the text, directly after the word or phrase in question, though some might want to wait before clicking on the numbers until they have finished reading the particular passage or chapter. In the TOC, individual psalms and proverbs are shown as chapters. Thus, if you want Psalm 23, you would click on Chapter 23 in the Psalm section. The psalms are formatted with longer lines broken in various places to fit the Kindle, as occurs in most Kindle Bibles, something that does not interfere with reading. (These line breaks appear in other parts of the Bible as well.) Perhaps the formatting would be different on the new, larger-screened Kindle Fire?A section called "Backmatter" appears near the end of the Bible. It includes a Concordance which shows abbreviations for each book in the Bible with links to each and includes a list of special symbols; it also has a Concordance of words and displays the following maps: the Exodus, the Divided Kingdom, the Holy Land under Herod the Great, Paul's three missionary journeys and his journey to Rome. You can see these maps when you page forward from the Maps link. The maps, which can be enlarged, are clear and basically readable, though the print is very small. The Concordance of words is problematic, however. For one thing, there is no way to link to different parts of the Concordance. It would be nice to have a link to each letter of the alphabet. As it is, with the Kindle Keyboard, you would have to page forward through the entire Concordance to find a word beginning with "S." (Perhaps it would be easier to quickly page through the Concordance with a Kindle Touch?) Also, when you go to a word in the Concordance, the references below it are put into a square and a message appears: "Move the 5-way to the right to begin panning the table, or click to place the cursor within the table." Although this feature works well in other sections of the Bible, every time I moved the 5-way to the right in this section, the cursor simply went down to the next word in the Concordance. Placing the cursor within the table accomplished nothing because no links took me to the references. On the other hand, a Concordance of words is really unnecessary for a Kindle Bible because the Kindle has its own search function that can find any word and show its context much more fully than does the Concordance. For example, the Concordance here lists four places where the word "zeal" occurs while the Kindle's own search function lists 35 places and has a link to each, a much better option. In effect, neither the lack of woodcuts nor problems with the Concordance interferes with reading this Catholic Edition NRSV. All the important things are here and work well. Since I learn a lot by comparing and contrasting different versions, some more liberal and some more conservative, I am glad I bought this translation for my Kindle Bible collection.
This is about the Kindle version. (I have not received the bonded leather version yet.)This is a very readable translation, true to the original texts, per the latest in solid biblical scholarship -- and an approved Catholic translation for study and personal use, per the USCCB website. The typeface is beautifully readable, even for my non 20/20 vision.Contrary to some earlier reviews, I found it VERY easy to quickly search for/find a book/chapter/verse: just go to the Table of Contents, click on the title of the book (eg, Jeremiah, Matthew, etc.) you want to view, and it then lists hyperlinks for each chapter in that book. Click on the chapter hyperlink you want - and read and pray away! The references are also easily accessible by clicking on the hyperlinked numbers - but don't distract the reader with the reference material if one just wants to read and pray with the scripture text. Now I can carry the Bible around with me anywhere -- and delays at appointments, stuck in traffic, etc. now offer graced moments of opportunity -- to read and savor a few lines of scripture. As if all that wasn't good enough: If you purchase a paperback or bound copy, you can THEN purchase the Kindle version for 2.99 under Amazon's Kindle MatchBook program. All this and heaven too!
Finding Catholic versions of the Bible at a reasonable price in electronic media is difficult. This one for my Kindle Fire perfectly supports a daily regimen that I have been working to cultivate. The Fire's features make it easy to find key references, highlight particular verses, bookmark where I want to continue the next day, get to the footnotes and other references, etc. It is also perfect for the occasional traveler. I don't have to lug the laptop along or carry a very large book. We just returned from a two week vacation, and leaving the laptop, my regular Bible, two novels and five magazines behind, saved 10 to 15 pounds (plus lots of space) in luggage/carry ons. Got my daily reading done as well as my light reading. I also lead a scripture study and have several additional electronic Bible versions and study tools. However, combined with the Kindle features, this has become my primary personal and reference Bible. An excellent and cost effective purchase.
