It's a very basic text but basics are what work. Unfortunately, it's not written for beginners. Clint assumes you are already an experienced shooter. It's more of a reminder of the fundamentals for someone who's been through some training. Still, it's an excellent book. I only wish it were longer.
Pretty danged good!If you're into firearms you'll know the wide variety of opinions on every aspect. This is Clint Smith's take on it. He knows what he's talking about and has the solid reputation. He's not a kook like a few teachers of the art and you'll find nothing extreme or controversial just solid approaches that works for Mr. Smith and countless others.Well written with lots of color and B&W photos. Well organized and worthwhile.Seems to be printed by a small almost vanity publishing company so I bet it goes out of print one day, hopefully with an expanded more professionally created edition (Not that there is any complaint about the quality of this edition but you can imagine a more polished version).I think if you have an AR you can benefit from this. If you're new to AR and tactical shooting this is a perfect starting point! Avoid all the internet "experts" and go with a proven master, Clint Smith!
Not everyone can afford to attend Thunder Ranch. Although a book is not a substitute for training, the low cost of this one compared to the amount of knowledge you will gain is a great trade off. I am a professional firearms instructor, and I would highly recommend this book to my students.
This is a review of the Kindle Edition. This is the only kindle book whose photos can actually be clearly seen without having to do anything! the photos in the book a a bit larger (I purchased both the kindle and paperback), but in hindsight the kindle edition would have served. The material presented is timeless, and sure it covers some material you probably already know, but the review and the new nuggets of information make this a very worthwhile read.
Clint's book is good for beginners or as a refresher for veteran shooters and goes heavily into the use of a rifle for self defense. His more than four decades of military, law enforcement, and training experience is an informative read The book covers some historical information and then goes into the selection and use of your rifle. It mostly focuses on the AR platform as that is the most common and covers some things I didn't know or hadn't considered. Having gone to Thunder Ranch and trained under Clint you can see his personality in the book. If you have heard of Thunder Ranch and been there or seen the DVDs you will understand, if not I would say pick up the book. I recommend this book to all
Clint Smith is a known quantity, having been in the field about which he's writing, for years. He's also an instructor who has the gift of distilling information into bite-sized, easily digestible word formulations. The compactness of this book, which is essentially a collection of tips, is indicative of that approach. On a first read through, I'm tempted to give this a 4 star review because I think it's missing a tightly woven narrative thread. It's more a feeling than anything tangible so I'm going to read it again and this time take more in-depth notes. In the meantime, it's getting an "I love it," simply because it's Clint and no matter your level of experience or expertise, Clint has something you can learn.
An absolutely fantastic read. This book distills Clint's very personal, very professional training into book form. Clint very effectively stays away from the "Tough Talk and BS Tactical" advice that you tend to see in modern gun magazines. I recommend this book and Thunder Ranch very highly.
This book is a wealth of knowledge put into a simple, easy to understand format. I will say though, that anyone who has had formal training on AR’s and tactics for example, might find that the information in this book is nothing more than a refresher. If you however, have not had any training or are new to shooting, this book is a must have. I will keep it in my range bag as a reference.
