About the Author
Jonathan Buckley was editorial director at Rough Guides, where he wrote several guidebooks, including for Tuscany and Umbria, Florence, and Venice. He has also contributed to The Rough Guide to Classical Music and The Rough Guide to Opera. Buckley published his first novel, The Biography of Thomas Lang, in 1997, and has written several more, including the critically acclaimed Xerxes and The River Is the River. Tim Jepson is a travel writer for The Telegraph and is the coauthor of Rough Guides to Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and Tuscany and Umbria. This is one of three books I took on a very recent 14-day tour of Tuscany and Umbria. (The others were Michelin Tuscany and Blue Guide Tuscany.) I had a rental car and I mainly visited the smaller places (Orvieto, Montepulciano, Pienza, ...) This Rough Guide has three authors and is very well balanced. At least one author knows a lot of history and art history, so the book has substantial depth for the serious traveler. (The Blue Guide has even more depth, and I'd whip that out for a second opinion.) I also frequently followed the Rough Guide's recommendations for hotels and restaurants, and my experiences were generally excellent. If I had to limit myself to one book, this would be it.

good travel guide
Rough Guide is my fav reference for Tuscany/Umbria. The new color photos & better grade of paper are nice but the content was disappointing. This is supposed to be an updated version yet there are no websites listed for any museos, ristoranti & most hotels. One can find better info @ Trip Advisor.
A wonderfully detailed guide that took us to many special places in Umbria. It was especially nice to have it on the iPad and iPhone, since we were only using the Umbria section.
this was a gift for friends traveling to Italy. they loved it. i love the Rough Guide series for italy and sicily.
