The 'Essentials' series typically provides a scaled-down version of the topic being covered. This is certainly the case with this book as well, though I am impressed by the volume of material the author managed to put into this book. At 442 pages, this book is somewhat longer than others in the series I'm familiar with, but it still maintains the concise and easy-to-follow approach. As a comparison, the ESSENTIALS OF NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT only contains 247 pages; go figure.The author starts with a historical overview of neuropsychological evaluations in school settings. While some might think this to be tedious---especially in a book that is supposed to be somewhat 'rapid reference'--- it serves an important part by reminding us of the evolution that has occurred in child assessment through the years. It is important to keep in mind that neuropsychology in general---but especially pediatric neuropsychology---is a 'young' field, with most major developments happening only within the past 60 years.Subsequent chapters address key areas of neuropsychological assessment, such as memory, sensory-motor functions, attention, language, etc. A guide (semi-template) on writing reports is included, as are recommendations for which tests to consider when putting an assessment together. Although it's not a bonus chapter, per se, the author concludes with a nice chapter on assessing children with Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.Overall, I'm very impressed with this book. Since a key part of my child psychology practice is the administration of neuropsychological testing, I feel the author covered the main points in a straight-forward, easy-to-digest manner. Thus, the content is well-suited to novice clinicians, as well as those with greater training/experience.All that stated, I wish our school systems afforded more time and opportunity for diagnosticians to do neuropsychological testing of kids. The author correctly points out that only a few schools have clinicians who are trained to do neuropsychological testing. Even if they did, who would have the time, given all the competing demands?Anyhow, school psychologists would do well to familiarize themselves with the content and tests included in this book. Even having the NEPSY-II (if your school district would pay for it), would help round out the arsenal of tests that can be used with kids.

Not too terribly useful; very simple description of the process that are covered by most graduate level training.
I have purchased other books from the "Essential" series and this one is by far the best. It provides information about the history of school neuropsych, as well as information about assessing each area of functioning. There is a nice "sample" report as well and helpul tips throughout. I have already incorporated some of the ideas from the book into my reports. I highly recommend this book. The only negative is that the author lists different types of tests for each area of assessment, but does not interject his opinion in terms of which tests he thinks provides the best information in that particular area. I ordered this book for a course I am taking with the author. I have not read the entire book yet but, as a practicing school psychologist for 34 years, I am very impressed with the style and content so far. The Essentials series are great.
I was trained in school neuro-psychological practices a few years ago and was informed by a former professor that a new version of the book had come out. I was satisfied with the new content and loved the examples outlined throughout the book. I would recommend buying this book!
I read this book hoping it would help with interpretations of neuropsych evals and it has not disappointed. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for an introduction to the topic.
