Well written, definitely a hiker's perspective of my favorite park. Since I am a (horse) packer, I wish a little credit had been given to the horses' influence on this park. These days, there is huge criticism of horses on the trails, etc but what people completely fail to realize is that these animals pack in (literally) tons of materials and supplies to maintain these trails for the benefit of all. You won't find a lot of human volunteers to carry 30 lb 8 ft long posts on their backs for 20 miles to a trail maintenance site. Yes, there may be a road apple or two on the trail but get over it and realize not all people are hikers. John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt established these parks for the enjoyment of all Americans with varied interests.
We got this for pre-vacation homework. I wanted a picture flavor of Yosemite and I am very happy. The author has roots to Yosemite in that his great grandfather had a falling out with John Muir. The author is really a very good writer, and that makes it entertaining to read. Good writers bring you places effortlessly.
Parks are certainly one of nature's most expressive creations. I never tire of visiting them. The book really defines the treasures of the park extremely well. I often reread it because the book keeps my memories of the actual visit to the park fresh.
We weren't able to purchase this book at Yosemite during our visit in April. In fact, the park staff told us that it would be rare to find it outside the park. Well, I got lucky and like most things National Geographic, it's a treasure. I'm inspired to make another visit to the park very soon. I'm sure it will ignite your imagination too!
This is a comprehensive book on Yosemite National Park supplemented by fantastic photographs of the park.It is over 200 pages long and done as only National Geographic can.
Settle in and read some well-written stories. The pictures are fantastic as well. we plan to visit Yosemite this year and this will add depth beyond what we'd find in most travel books.
We travel to Yosemite frequently yet learned more through the publication, as well as get photos unable to be gotten as an amateur. A great read for between visits!
